Total permanent disability – TPD meaning
In short, the following TPD definition applies to most TPD cases and is the definition understood by the majority of insurance and superannuation companies. TPD is commonly known as: a condition in which an individual is no longer able to work due to physical or other injuries or impairments.
When a disability is considered to be a TPD, an individual is often able to file a claim for TPD insurance through their superannuation, depending on their pre-existing cover and whether the individual became disabled due to circumstances such as a workplace accident.
We’ve broken down the total and permanent disability definition and claims process below, and explained in more detail, but if you need help, just chat, call or email.
What is considered a total and permanent disability is as follows – an injury, illness, or other physical or mental impairment. You’ll need to show how the injury has impacted you at work and have been off to show some evidence of your illness and it’a impact; Or there is an expected result of death. TPD is also generally considered to be a condition that prevents individuals from engaging in work or other gainful activities for a long period of time or on an indefinite basis.
A TPD claim is a compensation claim made by an individual who is unable to work due to a disabling injury or illness. The purpose of the claim is to receive financial compensation that can be used to cover the costs of medical expenses, rehabilitation, and other treatment. In order to qualify for a TPD claim, an individual must have been employed for a certain period of time and must be able to provide medical evidence of their condition. Once the claim is approved, the individual will receive a lump sum payment that can be used at their discretion. The payment an individual will receive is determined by factors such as the TPD cover amount and the extent of their TPD. Despite the name ‘total and permanent disability’ a TPD claim is not only for permanent disability. Find out more about your eligibility by talking with our team.
Who can claim total permanent disablement is dependent on a myriad of factors such as the type of injury or illness, the duration of your disablement, the effect this disablement has upon your ability to return to your occupation, your existing financial situation, and the details and cover of your insurance and/or super. It can all get a bit bewildering, so always best to discuss your TPD claim with a lawyer so you know where you stand. The most common TPD claims and TPD claim stories are for the following physical and mental injuries or illnesses:
✔ Cancer
✔ Stroke
✔ Heart attack
✔ Loss of limb
✔ Loss of hearing
✔ Loss of eyesight
✔ Mental health issues

The amount you can claim depends on the level of cover you have and the terms of your policy.
